Of all those only a handful have captured my ear and hearts as much as this project. As a Christian, I have never believed that any single style of music was more "sacred" than any other for one simple reason: it all comes down to content. This is especially so in our devotionally focused worship music since it carries with it our expressions of both our theology and our heart cry of praise. But no matter how well written the lyrical content, a song will not engage as a script for the church worldwide if it does not contain exceptionally crafted music as well.

"Hymns: a modern translation" takes on both these challenges and adds sparkling productions to beautiful vocals and genuine emotion to make one of the best modern worship CDs I have ever heard.

Starting with an outstanding list of time-honored songs from the centuries Sean and Aimee Dayton, along with producer Andrew Horrocks, burst into acoustic rock renderings of Nothing But the Blood, My Jesus I Love Thee, All Hail The Power, Fairest Lord Jesus, Crown Him With Many Crowns, and Holy, Holy, Holy. They add to that a perfect selection of recent century hymn expressions in The Wonderful Cross, In Christ Alone and What a Friend We Have In Jesus.

I am sure some will assume I am exaggerating by saying this is a perfect CD. They would be wrong. From vibrant acoustic rock instrumentation to warm, emotive vocals with a pensive and honest interpretive styling, Sean Dayton brings each song to track as an act of worship. Of the 320 some reviews we have written in the last 10 years at Worshipmusic.com, just 5 of them have been specifically albums dedicated to modern renderings of hymn classics. Taking the risk to make an artful blend of historically loved songs with engaging music for the present day requires not just musical prowess, but sensitivity to gather the best of the ages and present them to today's church.

As I travel down the freeway, this CD spins in the player. My 16 year old son is worshiping loudly, my 13 year old son lifts arms held up in worship and dear old dad (at the grand old age of 40) is lifting his voice and heart up in exultation to God (and keeping hands and eyes focused on the road). The scripture comes to mind - "One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts." (Psalm 145:4)

Clearly Andrew Horrocks and the Daytons have succeeded with this CD in their goal of having "people of all ages worshipping together". I encourage you to join in as well and review this CD for yourself. I am sure you will be caught up, as I was, with the saints of the ages as we sing to our Savior, Jesus.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/ion1002.html

Review by Kim Anthony Gentes

I Belong - Kathryn Scott (2008)

Kathryn Scott is the voice and writer of the modern classic song "Hungry". After a 2003 debut album ("Satisfy"), Kathryn has now come out with her first studio entitled "I Belong". With this new release comes a deep message of God's love and our identity in Him delivered in a crystal clear audio experience of music and lyrics. Even after listening to this CD about 20 times, I am more captivated each time through this beautiful project. The album runs along two paradoxical axis- music and lyric content.

Musically, the album starts at the top of the perfectly layered radio playable sound prevalent in many modern worship recordings. Bristling acoustic guitar strokes, wistfully layered electric guitars with melody and low end power chords, simple drum rhythms and bass lines. As the album progresses, the arrangements gently slope into a simpler, pensive sound that ends with everything stripped away- leaving some songs that rest perfectly in just piano and voice. Along the way we encounter interlaced strings, upright bass, mandolin and solo cello contributions. Each part is well placed, and the whole album has that synchronicity of perfect sound and space that musos would say "it just breathes".

Thematically, the album is a beautiful representation that flows from declaration of God's works and power ("Everything Changes", "Thank you For the Cross", and "You Gave Your Live Away") to His identity ("Only True God" & "What a Friend") and our identity in Him and His love ("I Belong", "Grace Has Called My Name", and "Love Rescued Me"). Songs of praise ("How Could I Ever Say Thank You") and prayer ("Will Justice Rain") are perfectly integrated. The themes on this recording will bring you in ebbs and flows into a clear revelation of God's love and our enviable position of favor in His eyes. Frankly speaking, I also appreciate, on this album, the avoidance of so many overly-clever lyric attempts that seem to be cropping up on other worship albums-void attempts to grab a tired audience of worshipers. This mature songwriting keeps Kathryn in the echelon of writers who maintain a strong connection with scriptural renderings of ancient truths.

As theme and arrangements intersect, I find this recording a perfect oasis in the desert of so many over-produced, over-thought, and over-hyped albums hoping to provide a drink of the songs of heaven to parched-weary worshipers. If you are just thirsty for drinking in great truth about God, while raising your heart in thanks and contrite declaration of His grace, you will really love this album. With music accessible for literally every age group, but beautiful enough to have several cuts on radio ("Everything Changes", "No Turning Back", and "Thank You For The Cross"), this project deserves time spinning in your car or stereo.

More than anything be sure to make it to the last three songs on this recording. Here you will find a thundering soul in pensive perfection (with a Ginny Owens-esque lilt) singing my favorite song on the album "Grace Has Called My Name". This is followed by a clarion call of gut wrenching prayer put to song- "Will Justice Reign" paints the honest picture of our choice we have to reach out to a broken world with Christlikeness lived through us. Wrapping up the album is a partial re-write of that 19th century hymn "What A Friend" (We have in Jesus). Keeping the original verses, Kathryn adds a singable hook for a sparkling new chorus.

What else can I say? I absolutely loved this album, and I think you will too! Enough said.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/42312.html

Review by Kim Anthony Gentes

Yuletide Blend - Terry Butler, Smitty Price (2007)

"For almost ten years, I have been listening to and reviewing CDs in my job here at Worshipmusic.com. In that time, I have listened to thousands of CDs, liked a few hundred, and have reviewed dozens of projects. I'll be honest, I am not a traditional Christmas music lover. Assuming that the fundamentals of good music are included in a CD, after that I find that I am looking for freshness and creativity, inspiration and contrition in music. So when I think about Christmas, I don't usually get excited. I am not one of those guys who is excited to sing carols with the family or anything. Still, in the last few years, I have begun to appreciate the depth of truth and community that come with the tradition of many of the Christmas songs of our faith. So that is the place I found myself at when I started listening to the new Christmas project titled "Yuletide Blend".

Produced by veteran worship leader and song writer, Terry Butler, along with CCM acclaimed producer Smitty Price, "Yuletide Blend" is simply the best Christmas project I have ever heard. It is a wonderful mixture of sparkling instrumental expression, brilliant arrangements, excellent song selection and perfectly spaced occasional vocals. The majority of the songs are presented as instrumental renditions that live up to everything perfect you think of when you hear the word "blend". Mixing large symphonic swells with gentle classical guitar, to radiant full band songs with world class electric guitar solos this CD is a surprise of joy right from the first bells chimes of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" to the last chorus of "Silent Night". Along the way you will find some of the best favorite traditional Christmas songs, along with a selection of 3 contemporary Christmas worship songs that you will want to begin singing every Christmas. I could rant on about the notable musical talent used on this CD, but I won't spoil the latte by telling you what spices where added here.

I have already played this CD through a couple of dozen times and I still love it each time through. Unlike most Christmas music that grows weary quickly on the ears, this project lifts you up and doesn't stumble at any point. Not only is this one of the best CDs I have ever heard, but I am awarding it an Editor's Choice for changing my mind about Christmas music. Thanks, Terry and Smitty, for brewing up a truly is a great "blend" for Christmas! Amazing! I can't recommend this CD enough to you- I highly encourage you to check it out!

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/ion1006.html

Review by Kim Anthony Gentes

Our God Saves - Paul Baloche (2007)

"Our God Saves"! With this declarative anthem, Paul Baloche launches another missile of praise heavenward, and takes us all along for the ride. This new album is a glistening collection of songs in a progressive acoustic/rock styling while remaining a thoroughly congregational experience. In many ways, "Our God Saves" could be considered the second edition of "A Greater Song" (the award winning album released last year from Paul Baloche). "Our God Saves" extends the repertoire of co-written songs from Paul and others such as Matt Redman, Brenton Brown and Kathryn Scott. Add to that writing and vocal contributions from Glen Packiam, Lincoln Brewster and Rita Baloche and you have a set list of 13 life-filled songs of praise. Top it all off with passionate prayer (track 5), a "live" feel and an emptier sonic pallet throughout the album and you have a great new project- Our God Saves.

Like "A Greater Song", the main contribution here is the well-written congregational songs that are encouraging (Our God Saves, Kingdom of God), content rich (Rock of Ages, How Great Thou Art) and sacrificial (I Cling to the Cross, You Gave Your Life Away, Great Redeemer, Your Love Came Down). Paul ebbs and flows through great news songs and reworked timeless songs of the faith. While the style stays with the primary acoustic rock style, the occasional detour into country-fried chorus (Praise) and easy listening (Beyond Us, You Gave Your Life Away). In many ways, Our God Saves steps back from being a heavily produced guitar album with loops and overdubs, making 90% of the album a lighter sonic project than A Greater Song, and lending to its markedly "live" sound. I actually liked this, because it gives us an experience that sounds easier to reproduce with our Sunday morning settings (from a worship leader perspective). While I believe the songwriting on A Greater Song edges out the collection gathered here, Our God Saves is certainly more exciting for those looking for a "new sound" from Paul Baloche and his "dream team" band.

The song "The Way" with Lincoln Brewster and the newly arranged revision of "How Great Thou Art" are excellent new contributions that will refresh any congregation wanting to hear a new way to sing timeless truth. The standout best song on this album is the title track "Our God Saves", which will be welcomed in almost any church using modern praise and worship styles in their musical devotions.

For me, though, my favorite song of the album is a guitar crunching new song called "Your Love Came Down". With sounds and harmonies similar to Amanda Abizaid singing "A Place in Time" (from the TV show 4400) or Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me", Paul Baloche grooves into uncovered territory for him or any of his earlier albums. Somewhat musically similar to David Ruis's recent "When Justice Shines", I loved the new song "Your Love Came Down". While I'd guess it is not a song most churches will venture into, it was my favorite song to listen to on this album. I'd place it a strong favorite for youth bands and more progressive worship bands to use in their appropriate settings.

"Our God Saves" continues not only Paul's relentless pursuit of great worship, but his ongoing insistence of making sure resources are included on the CD products to help get the songs into local churches. Here we find PDF lead sheets are included for 8 of the songs, and Quicktime movie files of how to play the 6 of songs are also placed on the CDROM portion of the product. Thanks again, Paul, for an encouraging set of songs, a great worship experience, and a nice contribution of resources.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/42212.html

Review by Kim Anthony Gentes

Playlist: Stand In Awe - Jeremy Riddle, Sheri Carr, Jan L'Ecuyer, Steve Jones, Charlie Hines (2007)

Does anyone remember what a worship CD is? The last several years, it seemed like the "Christian Music" industry had missed the point. Endless collections, remixed cover songs and CCM bands trying to detour into worship leading (but quickly moving back to performance model when the "worship thing" dried up) showed a clear misunderstanding of the foundations of what worship and praise was all about.

If you have felt (like me) disappointed by several popular CDs in the last few years, welcome you back to what a worship project should be- "Playlist: Stand In Awe" from Vineyard Music. One of the original vanguards of resourcing the church in worship, Vineyard has stayed true to its roots with great songs, while making continued strides in progressive musical production and sound with its arrangements and musicianship. The essence of a great worship song is its ability to resonate with the heart-cry of the worshiper. The "Stand In Awe" project is a wonderful set of worship songs that resonate clearly with followers of Christ.

From the opening song, Vineyard brings some of its best young voices singing its best new songs, presented with its best studio production values. Normally known for its great live recordings, Vineyard Music has its second studio production (following up from last year's "Sweetly Broken") that marks a new era of excellence for them under producer Casey Corum. Add to Casey's great production some outsanding vocals by Jeremy Riddle, Steve Jones and Charlie Hines and stellar guitar work by veteran Glenn Pearce, the mix on this CD glistens under any audiophile's microscope.

But it all begins with great songs, and this CD is chock full of them! From the infectious layered sounds of "Saving Grace" (with a live orchestra backing! Wow!) to the anthemic offerings "Stand In Awe" and "God of All Glory", to the prayer praises of "As It Is In Heaven" and "Throne of Grace", to the poured out devotional of "With All My Heart", this project has a lot to contribute your local church. Track four, "Christ is Exalted", even includes a beautiful song of Christ's life, appropriate for Christmas worship, or any time of year. No doubt contend that the title track "Stand In Awe" and "God Of All Glory" (both sung by Jeremy Riddle) will garner considerable attention from both churches and radio play alike.

But for this reviewer, all the songs mentioned thus far are supporting cast for one of the best songs presented to the church in the last ten years- "All I Have". This amazing song provides a simple, but infectiously untiring sound track for unashamed worshipers the world ‘round. To date, I have listened to this CD about 35-40 times. And yet, as I drove to work this morning, I still wept as I worshipped along with "All I Have" with the chorus echoing some of these lyrics:
"Jesus, all I have is You,
You're the hope I'm holding to...
As the heavens hold the skies,
It's Your hand that holds my life"

After receiving an advanced copy of this project just weeks ago, our church already has three of these songs in its repertoire ("Throne of Grace", "Stand In Awe" and "All I Have")! But of those songs, none has gripped people more profoundly than my new favorite song "All I Have". I am sure we will see this song redone by other CCM and worship artists, but here is your first chance to hear it and use it in your local church. A truly great offering!

In an era when music purchasers scarcely think it wise to buy an entire CD, Vineyard's new "Playlist: Stand In Awe" project is well worth it. A wise investment, providing both an amazing suite of songs and PDF chord and lyric charts to help local churches put the songs to immediate use.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/9039700120.html

Review by Kim Anthony Gentes

When Justice Shines - David Ruis (2007)

In recent years, musical styles represented on worship projects have coalesced into a "one-size-fits-all" acoustic/easy-listening/pop experience. While songwriting has continued to mature in the lyrical content of seasoned worship writers, the same cannot be said of engaging musical flavors in our worship environments. Proof of this is easily found- step into any local church today using a worship band format. What do you hear? Most often, it is the imitation of the sound of the local church's favorite worship writer/artist. Alternatively, it is the sound of the current popular singles playing on Christian radio.

What is missing? Local church voice, unique community expression, or local music culture flavor. These are issues too deep for be handled in an album review, but they come up here because of the encouraging life that springs up from David Ruis new worship collection "When Justice Shines". This project is a brilliant example of local church worship engaging its community with the real sound of its local musicians. It's refreshing. It contains the one element missing in 95% of the worship CD's produced today- risk!

If you have ever had the opportunity to meet David Ruis, you would not be surprised to hear that his music is full of risk with perfection. David and his band "Indigika" are the four members appearing on this 13 track collection of rhythm, sounds and melodies. Fusing and sounds styles ranging from electronica, world, rock, piano ballad, and dance, David and Indigika make no apologies for the journey they take. From the surrendering "Fragrant Oil", the declarative groove of "By Your Blood", the encouraging "Spirit Is On Me", and the proclamation of "Amen" the CD explodes with its signature sound of electronic loops mixed with crunch and whine electric guitar. Add to that the prophetic voice of David's lyrics and prayers interlaced in the songs and you are welcomed to a CD unlike any other worship CD you may have heard. David and Indigika rush unashamed towards the God's heart and His kingdom through the hopeful "Arise and Shine", into the lamenting "Justice", coming to a musical pause appropriately at "Rest In His Promise". The CD wraps up with some of its best material, my favorites being "Hold Me" and the title track "When Justice Shines".

All at once you hear excellent production and musicianship layered with beautiful times of intercession and heartfelt prayer. It's not likely that many local bands can match the prowess of Indigika, but that is just the point. David isn't concerned if you sound like him or his band. He isn't worried if Nashville is listening or if any of these songs will be top radio hits. He simply abandons himself to Christ, expressed in a flavor of music that God has gifted his local church with.

I think it's a lesson we should all learn. Not to pick up this CD and try to imitate it, but to try to emulate rather the principle its built on- that we are all on a journey. Those journeys have common touch points, for sure. But each local church has a unique journey, and a unique voice to express its worship back to God. David Ruis has been a pioneer as a songwriter and worship leader for many years having written such songs as "You Are Worthy of My Praise" and "Every Move I Make". In this CD "When Justice Shines", he leads the way again- this time encouraging churches around the world to find their voice in Christ and sing their song while bringing God's mercy and justice to their local communities.

I am pleased to give "When Justice Shines" our Editor's Choice award. I strongly encourage you to consider getting this project- it will inspire and encourage you with its prophetic call, its amazing live musicianship and its unashamed message of abandon to Christ as we look for justice to the broken here on earth.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/ion1003.html

Review by Kim Gentes

Holy God - Brian Doerksen (2007)

I love a journey- a great book, a good movie, or a speech from a great story teller. Each of these can move you through a compelling message and an artistic crafting of language. But journeys are not quick trips to the corner store- they are treks that take us to distant places and back again close to home. Journeys have story, subplots and great characters. Journeys take time. Journeys give back to the traveler as much as the traveler gives to the journey. So it is with the new project in my player for the last 3 weeks- "Holy God".

Song writer/worship leader Brian Doerksen presents this latest offering of worship not as a collection of "hit songs" (though there are some worthy of that moniker), but as a journey that takes you from the call of prayer to the throne of heaven and back home where we live our lives with our Holy God. Doerksen has always been an artist who presents themes in his projects and songs, but this project epitomizes that style. At sixteen tracks with an hour and 7 minutes in length, "Holy God" is a journey that will have you captured with the crisp musical vision of Doerksen's Holy God. But this journey will not find you drained and tired from the experience. Quite the opposite! From start to finish this project is rooted in Biblical truth that challenges the heart, comforts the soul, and lights the fire of passion for those pursuing God.

The album ebbs to life with the self-titled "Invocation" and builds nicely into the prayer song "Our Father In Heaven", where the Lord's Prayer is the core of a nicely woven song in which we all can open up in prayer to our Father.

Song three explodes into the title track "Holy God", which takes a microcosm journey into the attributes of the Trinity and His works to reclaim man into a restored relationship. "Holy God" is a simple and powerful anthem that radiates with the names and deeds of God, lyrically. "Holy God" is one of those great and rare songs that worship leaders will be able to employ in any format, from a simple piano or guitar with a single voice, to a rock band, to a full orchestra arrangement. And producer Philip Janz makes that point by revealing a masterful musical production that gathers the sounds of choral and orchestral ancient forms with driving modern guitars and stellar drumming. I won't spill all the lyrics here, but the punctuated style of the verses in this song exemplifies the strength of Doerksen's writing skills with that age old adage - less is more. In this case, much more!

If you aren't on the road of this journey by track three, you will be soon, as track four is a simple narrative to help you along. It also intros for track five "Song for the Bride" in which God speaks to His church from the text of Isaiah 30:15. The music and lyrics are as renewing as they are convicting. As the tracks roll on you will find that this project does something very few Christian worship recordings do anymore—it provides food for the soul of the believer, while at the same time engaging and inviting all to join in with the songs of heaven. As a person who listens to a lot of music, I find it common for many producers and records to simply try to hook the listener with a good groove or catchy melody- but the content is either lacking in Biblical depth or simplistic in its musical development. Not so with "Holy God" or Brian Doerksen, whose musical prowess and attention to detail in staying scripturally themed has his music played across thousands of churches around the world.

When my CD player hit "He Is Here", I had to stop and replay it. I just melted into my chair. In a beautiful duet with Christine Dente, Doerksen (in a co-write with veteran Paul Baloche) presents a wonderful song of peace in God. Very refreshing.

Just as you are getting refreshed, the project explodes again. This time into a sparkling rendition of Doerksen's upbeat "Light The Fire Again". Completely rejuvenated, you will love this new arrangement of a great praise song. And so it is with this entire project—ebbs and flows of musical and lyrical content bring you through a complete journey of the holiness of God and the prayerful weakness of us, His children.

There are plenty of great songs along the way of this journey, and I really want to be sure you check them out. But don't plan on rushing through this CD to find your latest hits. If you want them, they are there, but I would encourage you rather to sit down and listen for an hour and walk through an age old journey of soul and spirit learning about, searching for and being pursued by our Holy God!

Worship leaders will do well to take note of tracks 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 15, as possibilities for wonderful contributions to any churches repertoire. I also found myself especially captivated by track 13 that is a beautiful medley of the song "Be Unto Your Name" (DeShazo and Sadler) and the hymn classic "Holy, Holy, Holy" (Heber & Dykes).

What really impressed me with this project is how encouraged and thankful I came away from listening to it. That "we are a vapor" and "He is eternal", and yet in His holy power He still pursues us and calls us to return to Him. In the end, it is a hopeful message that reverberates through the songs, lyrics and music. It is a message that builds up the soul and stirs it forward towards Christ. I encourage you to take this journey as well.

This is a wonderful album worth taking the time to listen to and engage with.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/41252.html

Review by Kim Gentes

Unshakable - Andy Park (2006)

From unashamed to impassioned, from declarative to prayerful, and from intimate to glorious- these are the swells of heart language that flow from "Unshakable", the sparkling new collection of worship and songs from veteran songwriter/worship leader Andy Park. I can't stop listening to this newest project because, simply, is inspires me at new depths with each listen. What a great collection of songs- very diverse but seamlessly synchronized in musical production and heart language.

What I love about Andy Park resounds in this new project, just as it has always rang out from his music and his life. His integrity, his clarity of purpose and the example of his actions run a consistent thread from his songwriting, his mentoring of other worship leaders, his work in local and world missions, all the way to his raising of his children. I must admit to having had the opportunity to get to know Andy over a few years in mid nineties. More than anyone else I have met in arena of worship leaders and songwriters, Andy epitomizes the balance of outstanding leadership and humble service. Most will know Andy as the prolific songwriter who has penned "In The Secret" (I Want To Know You), "Holy Love", "We Will Ride", "The River Is Here" and over a hundred published songs used throughout the world. What most won't know is that Andy also is the mentor to a long list of worship leaders, including people such as Brian Doerksen, Craig Musseau, Kelly Carpenter, Larry Hampton and many other people without songwriting credits and recognition.

It is with that kind of pedigree that "Unshakable" comes our way. Andy draws from a lifetime of songwriting to God for use in the church. This crop of new songs is as strong as ever. But unlike any project in the past, his excellent songwriting is presented through the shimmering production of veteran producer Nathan Nockels. The results are the outstanding new project, "Unshakable".

Declarative praise launches this project with the title track "Unshakable", where pop stylings deliver a great musical rendition of lyrics based in the 62nd Psalm - an excellent song, reflecting the unchanging nature of God. "Revive Us Again" as a new prayer anthem that is sure to be echoed in many churches, because of its singable, engaging chorus and universal heart cry for God to visit us with His holy fire and life. Moving from style to style, this album explodes with a full gospel choir and stylings in "Savior of the World". After you settle back into your chair, you come to the narrative/prayer song "Come Reign" which teaches about the kingdom of God through ebbs of biblical song stories and flows of the prayer "come reign".

The fifth track swells with my favorite song on the project, "You Are God", where Andy re-inspires the well used theme from the books of Isaiah and Revelation where all creation lifts up its voice and declares "holy is the Lord". If you are looking for an excellent new song to use in church this week, I urge you to look at this great song. I have to admit that I have played this one in loop for over an hour. It has that scriptural clarity and anthemic nature of a song you expect to be sung around the throne of God.

But don't stop listening there. As you continue listening to this project you will find precious pearls (the title of the next track, pun intended) on each of the 11 tracks on this project. From the devotional "Precious Pearl", "Worthy of All My Love" and "To Give My Life Away" to the intimate "My Father, My Friend" you will find encouraging treasures to both bless you and give language to your blessing of our Lord through worship and praise. One song I will point out in closing is the poignant "Carry Me", which is a prayer song whose lyrics are reminiscent of the desperate times of David and whose message resounds in the hearts of all who have encountered brokenness and painful times.

Andy Park's "Unshakable" is a brilliant marriage of top notch songwriting and sparkling production from a man whose life reflects the message of his music. This new project earns our highest marks here at Worshipmusic.com, and we are happy to mark it as an Editor's Choice as a great new contribution to the church.

I truly hope you take the opportunity to listen to the audio clips, but even more so to get the entire album and see if several of the songs don't find their way into your local congregation. This is one of the best albums I have heard in the last few years, so I hope you take a listen.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/ion1001.html

Review by Kim Gentes

Yesterday Today & Forever - Vicky Beeching (2005)

I first heard of Vicky Beeching from the landmark Vineyard UK CD "Hungry", where her song "There Is No One Like Our God" appeared in the track list. Later, in 2002, the release of another Vineyard UK project, "Holy", included her popular song "Above All Else". This year, Vicky has come to fruition as a songwriter and worship leader with her new release "Yesterday, Today & Forever". This is a clean, crisp studio project with a mirthful combination of church-usable worship songs with radio-playable production.

What you notice right off about this CD is that it has perfect production sensibility for each song, elevating the arrangements for the anthemic songs and paring down to simplicity for the beautiful, haunting songs of intimacy. In fact, it took me a long time to detach from engaging in the worship music contained on this CD, to allow me to listen critically to the various components of production and songwriting it contained.
From the title track "Yesterday, Today & Forever", you will not be able to sit idly by as this project rolls on. You will be singing or humming your way through, and this is good. And this is not just because the music is interesting, but also because the lyrics have a beautiful balance and deep content to them such as the second verse to her opening
track:

Uncreated One,
You have no end and no beginning
Earthly power fades,
But there is no end to Your Kingdom
Always loving, always true,
Always merciful and good, so good.

Vicky's writing has a conscious balance of awe-filled, glory expression (songs like "Yesterday, Today & Forever," "Above All Else" and "Majesty and Mystery") and prayer and surrender songs ("Search Me", "Nothing Is Impossible" and "Extravagant Worship"). Her lyrical content is solidly scripture-based, while be obviously passionate and personal. A bit of background information on Vicky helps with understanding some of this lyrical depth, when I found out she is has a theology degree from Oxford University. Along with her competent acoustic guitar prowess and pristine voice, she certainly has a wealth of skills to draw from in writing and presenting her songs of devotion.

Listening through the CD, you will have a hard time not closing your eyes and surrendering your heart, if you sing along with honesty to the song "Above All Else". I still find myself in tears when I say those words from my heart. In this same vein, "Captivated" is aptly named as the song allows you to consider the Lord and be captivated by his beauty. This CD playlist is a wonderful washing of music and lyrics, bringing in waves of cresting celebration songs, accentuated with ebbs of deep worship songs. For me, the most memorable part of the CD is the last 3 songs, where we go from being captivated by His glory, to the 6/8 swing of surrender in "Extravagant Worship" and ends with a beautiful re-envisioning of the classic "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus".

Because of the variety of tempo and arrangements across these songs, this is not a CD that will grow tired quickly in your player. Be sure to check it out- you will not be disappointed.

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/spd73514.html

Review by Kim Gentes

I Have To Believe - Rita Springer (2005)

Rita Springer. Over the years, those who have heard Rita and been encouraged by her songwriting, worship leading and recordings have know there is one word that is synonymous with her music- passion. No matter the context or setting, you knew that no song would be glossed over or done half-hearted, if Rita was in the room. And so, her soaring vocals have torn through hearts across the church. And while the contribution of Rita Springer isn't limited to just a style, and her songs have become well used in many parts of the body of Christ, it has been her voice that has earmarked her ministry.

With 'I Have To Believe' Rita Spring returns with her most sonically excellent project to date. Every note, chord, and rhythm are laid out with expert precision into the tracks of this new offering. And this is not surprising, since acclaimed producers Nathan Nockels and Margaret Becker have taken the helm for the production on this recording. The result is both beautiful and surprisingly broad in its reach. For, in the past, while Rita's earmark has been thundering passion in both heart and voice, this was the same thing that would make the average person listen for 3 or 4 songs to any of her previous albums before taking a break to recover, before listening to the rest of the album.

'I Have To Believe' brings Rita's songs, voice and passion into pristine focus for both the general listening worshiper and the worship leader looking for new songs that they can do in local churches. Pre-eminent in this recording is the great radio listenable track 'You Are Good', a nice acoustic piano cover of Martin Smith's 'Rain Down', and a new classic Rita Springer ballad 'O God Of Mine'. The production is perfect, really. I loved hearing Rita flow more subtly and gently through the warm verses of 'Captured', parts of 'You're More Than a Friend', and ebbs and flows of 'Everywhere'. What makes these all the more poignant is the contrast they present to places where she lets her voice soar and rip through with real passion.

Aside from the technical excellence of this album the development of styles into a few different directions on this album is also a nice surprise, with the gospel groove of 'I Have To Believe', the guitar laden 'You Are Good' and the touch of tech/ethereal meanderings of 'Captured'. Wonderfully done, but weaved with consistency through an entire album that sounded like a complete offering and not a bunch of scattered songs. For the worship leader wondering what might be in store for their local church on this album, there are a few very good selections to glean, though this is clearly aimed at being a premium radio listening experience. The top of the list for worship leaders looking for material should be listening to 'You Are Good', the infectious 'Captured' and covers of 'Rain Down' and 'You're More Than a Friend'.

'I Have to Believe' is not just a maturing of talent for the artist, but a perfect blend of producers with one of the most gifted vocal talents in all of Christian music. For this, and the great new songs we get, <!--

These are the thoughts that come to mind as you sit down and worship along with worship leader Carl Tuttle's latest studio CD 'Vineyard Classics'. These are some of the most poignant, worshipful songs you will ever hear. At the core of this album is simplicity and devotion. The songs are accessible in their musical and lyrical arrangements, though the album is very well produced and sonically pleasing. For those who are familiar with the songs that have come out of the Vineyard music stream in the last 25 years, they may be aware of the foundational component that Carl Tuttle and his music have played in forming the Vineyard values and style in its music content and writing.

On this album Carl revisits the best songs he has penned and captures fresh and engaging recordings of these great songs. From the celebrative 'Lift Jesus Higher' and 'Hosanna' to the repentant 'Oh Lord, Have Mercy on Me' to the glorious 'All The Earth Shall Worship', song after song will wash a sense of peace and truth into your heart. It's interesting to me that as I look at these songs, so much of the lyric content is simply capturing the message or direct content of the Psalms, or various other scriptures.

As a worship leader myself, I have a repertoire of songs from across many groups. I use some UK worship songs (Redman, Hughes, Delirious et al), Passion worship (Tomlin, etc), Integrity music (Doerksen, Ten Shekel Shirt), recent Vineyard music (Dwell, David Ruis, Andy Park etc), and a smattering of other sources (from Third Day tunes to old hymns). I mention this because it might help those who have similar song sets in their local churches. Over the last several years, as these songs have grown and expanded into our local churches, the music has become increasingly well produced and more complicated in arrangement. While it gives us fresh music with interesting sounds, in an effort to make each song more interesting, more engaging, more unique, it seems that we may have lost something. This new album from Carl Tuttle, reminded me of the simplicity and power of songs speaking of repentance, humility and simple abandon to falling at the feet of Jesus.

What I try to do, as a worship leader, is to hold in tension two things: following the dynamic direction of God for the moment, and using a collection of well-thought, scripturally-centered songs that present the complete picture of Christ and his works. What I love about this album is that it reminds me of one of the most important themes that can easily disappear from our music selections- the song of repentance. The seeds of revival and renewal have always been prayer and repentance (2 Chron. 7:14). Three songs on this album are powerful in that regard of giving us language to express our human weakness while inviting Christ's redemption to overwhelm us- 'Without Your Love', 'Because of the Lord's Great Love', and my favorite 'Oh Lord, Have Mercy On Me'. I recently reintroduced this last song to our local church during worship and it was very engaging. What I'd like to convey most of all is that this is an album that lyrically encourages you to simply bow down at the feet of Jesus.

Those of you who have long known these songs will be happy to find this CD of excellent songs collected into one release. Those who haven't heard these before, I strongly encourage you to check out this CD and be refreshed. A truly great album!

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/ct5701512-2.html

Review by Kim Gentes

Today - Brian Doerksen (2004)

The chapters of Nehemiah have long been a prophetic spark to call forth life in the church. The painful beginnings in the rubble of defeat and shame. The ongoing antagonism and attacks of Sanballat and other nay-sayers. Even the internal struggles of uniting the families and people into the one task of rebuilding the wall of hope. Nehemiah is not a story for the great victorious church, where Christians triumph idyllically in every circumstance. Rather, it is a call to the broken and tired church, where followers of Christ long to be reminded, and encouraged, to once again stand up, and say with that ageless prayer-confession of Joshua, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15).

With these two thoughts, Brian Doerksen begins an interwoven message of music and ministry through his newest offering, entitled "Today". As I soon found out, merely picking up this CD and listening to it, was a bit of a limiting perspective in engaging with all that this project encompassed. For days, I listened to and enjoyed the CD, but the richness of the "Today" experience wasn't clear until I began to read the book-length liner notes (seriously) and finally to pour over the "Today" DVD (available separately from the CD).

"Today" is a worship project that really needs to be experienced to be appreciated (IE. get the DVD!). And there is much to appreciate here. Musically, the track list is comprised of eight new songs (except for one, all written or co-written by Doerksen), five redone songs mostly from Doerksen's Vineyard repertoire, and two re-visited classic hymns. Stylistically, this is Doerksen's most diverse palette of tastes presented on a single album yet. While maintaining his signature vocals and soft pop acoustic/electric sound, Brian draws in sounds and sights of the past with moving renditions of hymns of the church, and incorporating music styling from classical and traditional influences. Blending pop vocals and instrumentation, adult & children's choirs, a wonderful orchestral group and even a jazz ensemble, Doerksen, and co-producer Philip Janz, create an album that bridges ages and builds a wall of God's faithfulness through music and multimedia.

The live evening of worship (as recorded on the DVD) begins with the reading of Nehemiah and a short message by Doerksen. The music recorded on the CD provides the content structure of the worship flow that goes from declaration and celebration to deep devotion and contrition to heartening prayer and exultant praise. The first song and title track bursts out with the anthem "Today", singing a modern revision of the declaration of Joshua. This song is typical Doerksen- refreshing lyrics, hook-laden melody, and easily played music. But right from this first track, there is a distinctive clarity on this project that defines a previously indefinable Brian Doerksen. From the understatement of pop influence on this album, to the inter-generational song selection, to the orchestral arrangements, to the blends of vocal leads, choirs, and children- Doerksen looks more at home on this album than any to date. The song "Today" will be a great new 'call to worship' song for the church.

The second track is the song "Everlasting", which is a building declaration song that is vibrant and memorable, and ripe for use in churches. And like much of the new songs on this album, it is a well-crafted collaborative songwriting effort. This CD is a wonderfully arranged worship set, songs selected purposefully to tell a story in a rich sequence of ebb and flow. Track three is a deep prayer/declaration (in the tradition of Psalm 42) called "You Are Everything". This song leads perfectly into the lilting melody of "The River", a country-styled song highlighting the beautiful voice of Brenda Janz. Don't miss this song, or you will miss one of the most easily adapted contributions on this new album. For brevity, I will not explain each song on this album, but please give yourself the benefit of listening to them. You won't be disappointed. From a song about our place with God ("My Redeemer"), to the call to war in "Fortress 144", to the timeless repentance anthem of "Refiner's Fire", this is a storehouse of great songs for the church.

My favorite track on this project is titled "Hear From Heaven", a soul-piercing prayer borne from text of 2 Chronicles 7:14. This prayer/song calls to God to forgive our wickedness and heal our land. I have been saying regularly in this review that you must experience this project to fully appreciate it, and this is most poignantly expressed in the video (from the DVD) of this song. I was moved to tears as I watched every person in the auditorium of the event expression hand actions while singing this song. The song rests in tender prayer transitioning from our cry for God's healing into the wonderful declaration of His work on the cross, through the song "I See The Cross". The album concludes with an equally powerful reprise of "Today", in which any father or parent will be brought to tears as you see generations of Christ's servants declare in song to Him, "today we choose to follow You"!

There is no doubt about it, the new album "Today" with Brian Doerksen will bring you a collection of songs ready for use in a broad spectrum of church applications from styling as diverse as guitar-driven bands to blended worship to choirs and orchestra-backed ensembles. But this project is much more of an experience of sounds and sight than just a few new songs. It is a celebration of what the church is called to, and what it can be- a church of unity, of power, of history and of "today".

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/30202.html

Review by Kim Anthony Gentes

Even So Come - Kevin Prosch (1999/2004)

Live worship albums have been a strange mixture of odd results over the years. From ultra-produced albums that have little semblance to the actual original recording from which they are founded to the "push play" recordings of raw worship with poor production, one always has to take the "live" moniker in an album title with a grain of musical salt. And this isn't just a recent thing- it is something that has been the way people have viewed "live worship" albums for now well over 15 years. But few people would disagree that the monumental contribution of Kevin Prosch's "Even So Come" album gave us the landmark for all attempts at live albums that would follow in the 13 or so years since its original release by Vineyard Music (back in 1991). We are elated to announce that Even So Come has now just be re-released and is available!

What is even more astounding about it is that while many have come after, attempting to mimic or even be inspired on to a better results- none, absolutely none, have surpassed Even So Come. On the musical side, this album has a supreme combination of more vibe, great musicianship, and wonderfully balanced production than any live album ever recorded in the worship genre, and most Christian music for that matter. Even if you aren't stylistically inclined towards Kevin Prosch's musical tastes, you simply can't ignore the great listening and engaging experience of this album. On the "worship" side of things, this album epitomizes the spiritual journey of the "dream" spontaneous worship set- a time when the obvious anointing of the Holy Spirit was so present that it was captured on the recording of this evening of worship.

This album starts off right, as a live offering-- inviting the listener to humble their hearts by joining in with the opening prayer led by Kevin Prosch. Walking through the songs on this album is a list of classics that now stand as some of the most unique and powerful lyrical and musical pieces played in churches in the last 20 years. The scripture-inspired prayer of "Show Your Power" catapults you into the experience from the first downbeat, as it has for thousands of churches around the globe. The great song, "Shout to the Lord" is a refreshing upbeat declaration of prayer and obedience to the direction of scripture to sing and even shout to the Lord. The next song is the title track- an ethereal, prayer song called "So Come" which invites Jesus to return to His bride the church in the manner of Revelations ("come Lord Jesus"). My favorite on the album, this song is as soothing to the soul as it is haunting to our sensibilities. This is one of the few songs I have ever used in a church service, that also has the strength and depth of content to be equally comforting at a funeral of a loved one (I have used it in both). The album truly moves on with the recording track of a spontaneous song, they titled "Great is the Lord", which highlights the amazing gifting of not only the musicians, but Prosch as truly an inspiring musical and lyrical gift to the whole church. This is followed by three more Prosch classics (His Banner Over Me, Thanks Lord, Save Us Oh God) which have also found their place across the worldwide church. Then comes another amazing spontaneous song, and finally the project concludes the way it began- with ministry and prayer.

What is even more amazing than the songs and this tremendous CD is the far-reaching effect of Kevin's ministry as an igniting force in the lives of innumerable worship leaders, from the local unknown worship leaders to now well-known ones such as Matt Redman, Darrell Evans and many more.

The re-release of this great album is welcomed back to where it belongs- a true gift to the world wide church! Absolutely no one should miss having this CD in their collection, whether the worshipping Christian, or the aspiring worship leader. It is such an important album on every level, we have to give it our Editor's Choice Award. The number one live worship album ever!

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/b03cd.html

Review by Kim Gentes

Dwell - Casey Corum, Dave Fife, Sheri Keller, Jessica Ketola, Robbie Reider (2003)

"You can have Your way
You can have Your way
You can have Your way... "
...this is the naturally supernatural chant that serves as the introit to bring in the lyrical and musical masterpiece that is "Dwell", the new release from Vineyard Music USA. "Dwell" as a musical offering is nothing short of phenomenal, leaving me at a loss to find an album I've liked more in the last 5 years. We will come back to examining the song content, but before that, we have to talk seriously about resourcing the church in worship. In the last several years, I have listened to literally hundreds of praise and worship CDs. A couple of years ago I began to develop a secret "wish list" of what I would consider the "perfect" way to put together a worship project and present it for use to the body of Christ in a music release. Here is that list:

great songs for the actual church to use

real life worship recording using those songs

complete song resources available (printed music , charts, lyric masters)

examples showing how to play the songs, both in band and acoustic setting

This list came out of seeing so many projects out there, often lacking in some way from having gone "half-way" with any one of the important items mentioned. I am delighted to say that "Dwell" is the first album I have found that to tackle that complete list-and it achieves amazing results.

The intro song and title track, Dwell, is a lyrical epiphany of prayer and scripture woven onto a gorgeous tapestry of instrumentation and enthralling 6/8 rhythm. It reminds us, as all great songs do, that the most evocative renderings of the heart come in simple, succinct, well spoken truths. I can scarcely go a day when these words don't ring in my thoughts:
"Dwell in the midst of us
Come and dwell in this place
Dwell in the midst of us
Come and have Your way"
The remaining two sections of the song are even more poignant, but I will leave them for you to discover (to your delight). I could rant on about this song, but I am convinced that simply allowing you to listen to this song (which you can do online) will be plenty enough to convince you. Plus, the great songs on this album begin with Dwell, and run through nearly every selection included on this project. From Dwell to the amazing upbeat favorite More Than Ever, to the wonderful ballad So In Need, and on through, no "filler" songs made it on this album. To understand what has happened with Vineyard Music USA on this recording, I talked to producer Casey Corum and found that they took a full 2 and a half years collecting the best songs (out of many hundreds) and letting this album grow into the offering that it is today. In my opinion, this is the best collection of new Vineyard songs on a single album since the 1987 release of Glory. If the new direction of Vineyard Music USA is to wait and release an album every 2 years, with this kind of quality, I applaud them! It will take me over a year to introduce my congregation to all the great songs I want to use from off of this CD, anyways!

For just a brief moment, I have to mention the amazing musicianship on this CD. You can read the liner notes for yourself, but consider for a moment that this CD uses the best musicians connected with Vineyard Music from around the world. This serves up a truly great album in a way that it will be listened to again and again to anyone who lends an ear.

The coup de grace for the Dwell project doesn't actually come from the audio CD itself. Even though the CD includes chord charts, lyric masters on a CD-ROM format, the real resourcing is placed on to the 6 Gigabyte monstrosity of a DVD that they have called a "Dwell Toolbox". It might be more aptly titled, the "Dwell Toolshed" or the "Dwell Home-Improvement Super Store of Worship Resources", but I suppose that doesn't exactly roll off the tongue like "Dwell Toolbox". Let me explain! The DVD comes FREE with the album when you buy the CD, and this may come off as good and bad. Good, because you get resources that are the best I have seen for any worship project released ever. Bad, because I worry that most people will think that anything free must not be worth selling on its own. But that would absolutely not be the case with the Dwell Toolbox DVD. Here is what the toolbox contains:

Concert Video- the DVD contains the complete, and entire video of the live recording of these amazing 15 songs (surprise, they even include an extra song on the DVD that isn't on the CD-don't forget to watch it on the DVD, it is well worth it!).

Small Group Worship Sets- 5 different preprogrammed sets of 4 songs in each set. Prepared as a complete worship tool for small groups, and it includes on-screen lyrics!

Musical Tutorials- indepth video walk-throughs of every song on the acoustic guitar, showing how to play each song, including special hooks and chords to help you learn the songs quickly. Also included are indepth instrument-specific tutorials for electric guitar, drums, percussion, and synth, including the details of how they achieved the sounds and hooks played on the album.

Interviews- indepth video interviews with both the band and the songwriters showing the heart and people behind the music.

The truth is, Vineyard could have packaged this whole project into 3 separate products- audio CD, concert DVD and musicians toolbox DVD. But they chose to put it all together into one package and sell it as part of the regular CD offering. This is not only an amazing service to the body of Christ, but it is done with an amazing album.

I would have given the Dwell audio CD alone an Editor's Choice award, but with the inclusion of the incredible DVD toolbox, I am at a loss as to how to more greatly honor this project. The only thing not included in this massive data overload of CD/CD-ROM/DVD bliss is full piano/vocal/guitar scored sheet music, but alas they have taken care of that on a separate songbook (which even includes guitar tab!).

How else can I say it- regardless of who you are you should seriously consider the amazing Dwell album from Vineyard Music USA. If you are still a skeptic, listen to the audio of this album online and you will hear what I mean. Buy the project and watch the DVD, and you will see what I mean!

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/vmd8032r.html

Selah
Kim Anthony Gentes

A Place Called Surrender - Dave Lubben (2003)

Sometimes listening to CDs means we miss the whole point of a worship recording project. The idea that we are supposed to just "listen" to a music experience was not part of the heart or intention of most pastors, worship leaders or ministers. In fact, most of them would say that if all you did was listen to some nice songs, that they aren't interested in writing songs, making music and producing CDs.

Such is the case with Vertical Music newcomer, Dave Lubben. His freshman release is a completely live and personal journey into what is really worship. This does not involve the temporal items such as instruments, music and CDs, but the eternal action of laying down one's life, as a surrendering act of obedience, into the powerful peace of God's will. You could have learned this was on Dave Lubben's heart, and in God's heart for him (and us!), simply by reading the incredible story in the CD liner notes. I will leave you to do that, but even without the amazing story of life and death that surrounds the recording of this album, all one needs to do is simply participate in what is sung and spoken on this wonderful musical journal to catch the real "story". Aptly named, A Place Called Surrender is about the real message of Jesus. The message he gave to all who would come after him- that they should take up their cross and follow him.

Each song on this project weaves a tapestry of humility and praise that any follower of Christ can echo, in words and heart. From songs of building joy ("Lord Most High" and "King Of Nations") to plaintiff prayers like ("We Need You", "Save Us" and "Speak To Us") to songs of abandon and devotion ("Surrender" and "Lay It Down"), this engaging night of worship is not just a CD, but a beautiful collection of modern psalms. Initially, I was captivated by the energy and intensity of the opening cut "Lord Most High" and the heartfelt prayers included in the recording. As I continued on, I went from praise to prayer and finally to bowing on my bedroom floor in worship to Christ, tears running down my eyes as I found myself reflecting on the call of the lyrics on my favorite new song- track seven, "Speak To Me". Repentance is the response of our lives coming in contact with the Holy One, and as I echoed the words on that song, I found myself weighing sadly short of the scriptural themes being sung to God. As the CD continued on, the next track, "Lay It Down" has Dave Lubben reading from the text in Psalm 116 (verses 2, 3, 5, 7). As the lyrics of the song and the Scripture reading wash over you, the essence of this project will become pristinely clear- it is about expressing the true heart of worship (submission to God's will, brokenness, offering our lives to Christ, and repentance).

And while the experience is clearly out front on this new project from the re-launched Vertical Music (the youth label from Integrity Music), this CD is also purveyor of both excellent musical presentation and powerful songs for the church. In fact, the more you listen to this CD, the more the great work done by producer Nathan Nockels (from OneDay/Passion CDs, Philips, Craig & Dean "Let Your Glory Fall", Watermark and others) begins to shine. The presentation is aptly framed with accessible musical and vocal parts. Along with great song writing by Lubben, this album is absolutely full of usable, excellent songs for the church. Nockel's arrangement skills not only make strong presentation of the material for church use, but also give a wonderful diversity to the flow of the album. So the album is top notch stuff in the production department. But as I said before, that is clearly not the focus here- worship is.

If you are a worship leader looking for a cache of excellent new songs, you must give this project a serious listen. I will be listening to this CD for a long time... you simply will not get tired of it. I believe that songs from tracks 1 through 4, and tracks 7 through 10 provide the best set of songs on a single album that I have heard in a very long time. In fact, I have never recommended 8 songs from any single album ever! If you are like me, you would be skeptical of anyone claiming there was eight (yes 8!) strong, usable songs on an original album. So don't believe me, but make sure you check out the songs yourself by listening to the samples provided online. And thankfully, Vertical Music backs up this excellent CD by providing us with an entire suite of resources to get these songs to use in church (songbook, stereo tracks, and CD-ROM digital songbook).

This CD is easy to select as an Editor's Choice Award winner for me, for all the reasons I have given in this review. But again, don't take my word for it, check out the songs above for yourself. And remember, once you buy the CD for yourself, be sure to read the liner notes!

Product Link http://www.worshipmusic.com/26642.html

Review by Kim Gentes
